The Israili Army Diet

The Israeli Army diet was a popular fad diet back in the 1970s. It was supposedly based on the diet used by the Israel Defence Forces for new recruits but, but it had no real connection with the Israeli Army.

The idea of naming fad diets after real organizations, which really have nothing to do with the diet at all, is fairly common. For instance, the 'Mayo Clinic diet' was not designed by the Mayo Clinic, and they warn people against using it.

The Israeli Army diet was supposed to be followed for a very short time. It lasted for eight days, and the dieter could only eat one type of food each day. As you can see from this list, this is an extremely limited diet.

1. Days One - Two: Apples
2. Days Three - Four: Cheese
3. Days Five - Six: Chicken
4. Days Seven - Eight: Salad

Black tea or coffee was also allowed.

It isn't clear how many apples or other food the dieter was allowed on this diet, but it must be assumed that the diet was intended to be a very low calorie diet (VLCD), which is considered to be unsafe, regardless of what type of food you're eating. Doctors rarely prescribe VLCDs, but when they do they usually require the patient to stay in a clinic for constant medical supervision. This is basically a starvation diet, without the benefit of a true fast.

If someone stays on the Israili Army diet for the full eight days, he or she will experience a very temporary weight loss. However, as with all low-calorie and very-low calorie diets, the person undertaking the diet will soon regain the weight (and 3 to 8 pounds more), when he or she returns to their normal diet. Since the diet is so limited in variety, very few people actually completed the full eight days. This is just as well, because the diet would not provide the needed calories, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

For these reasons, nutritionists and doctors were critical of the Israeli Army diet and it declined in popularity. It is now regarded as a classic fad diet like the grapefruit diet or the cabbage soup diet.
